Cover for listed properties

High value contents cover

Cover for liability to domestic staff up to £10,000,000

Alternative accommodation cover

If your home is a large building then many insurers will not want to cover it. Large homes, typically regarded as homes with 6 or more bedrooms, may have higher rebuild values than standard sized homes and have higher value contents. PolicyCastle’s panel of insurers wants to protect specialist risks, and does cover larger homes.

Larger homes often have high value contents. It is important to get the correct level of cover for valuables, and high value items have to be specified when building your quote, so that the insurers are aware of them if a claim has to be made. PolicyCastle’s online quote allows you to specify your valuables easily, and if you want you can add a photo and any receipts at the same time.

Stay up to date on the value of valuables

If you have works of art or jewellery in your home then it is important to know the up to date values for your home insurance. Works of art in particular can increase in value significantly, for instance if the artist dies, and your insurance needs to reflect those values so you are not under-insured. Items can also go down in value, if they go out of fashion, or if the value of the materials they are made from drops, and you should change the sum insured in your home to reflect these changes. Regular valuations by an expert are important.

Maintenance

Maintenance of large homes can be a never-ending task; there may be a large roof, or a wide area of paintwork to maintain. Catching a problem early means that it can be fixed before more serious damage is caused. Heating a large home is typically expensive, so having an annual boiler service may well save money, as well as improving insulation with lagging in the loft and double glazing on windows. Large homes often come with large gardens which need ongoing care; remember to prune back bushes near to the house so they don’t give burglars something to hide behind.

The building bricks, how to be covered whilst works are in progress

Looking to do some improvements or renovations to your property? Whether the works require you to vacate your property or not, always advise your insurer prior to the works beginning. Be prepared to have a Schedule of Works to hand, showing full details of the works to be carried out.

Victim of burglary? What should you do?

Hopefully your home will never be burgled. It is a horrible experience, and expensive; the average cost of a burglary in the UK, including damage to property and stolen property, is well over £2,000.

Insure the rebuild value of your home, not the market value

Do you insure your home for its market value? If so you may be paying too much premium because it’s the rebuilding cost which should be the amount you insure.
